Wallpaper & Border Installation
Common Problems
  • Seams not sticking: generally happens because the outside edges have dried when the strip was hung. Be sure to check the edges for paste before hanging. Border adhesive is helpful in correcting seams. Improperly prepared walls can also effect seams. See our wall preparation page for more details.
  • Bubbles & Blisters: generally caused by incorrect booking. Paper was not allowed to expand before hanging and has now expanded on the wall.
  • Paper not sticking: Improper wall preparation is often the culprit in this one. Also, if the paper does not seem 'slimy' when wetting it may not have enough paste.
  • Color burning: Can be caused by chemical reaction. If a paper is prepasted and is exposed to other agents such as sizing, or other paste, a chemical reaction can cause discoloration.
  • Flaking: Often caused by excessive paste getting on the front of the paper. Make sure to wipe your paper with a clean sponge to eliminate this problem
  • Mismatched Pattern: If a paper is overworked by re-applying a strip several times, the paper may stretch out of match. Never force a strip to match, gently remove and realign beginning at the seam edge.
  • Seam gaps: There are several factors that can cause this problem starting from improper wall prep (paper does not have a good adhesion factor to hold on). Also if the paper was left to soak too long, or was over worked it can cause the paper to shrink when drying. Be careful not to overwork or over wet your wallpaper strips

Pattern Matching
There are 4 major pattern matching options:
  • Random: This refers to a pattern or design that has no vertical repeat like a stripe. You must be sure to install each strip in the same direction to ensure that two of the identical strips are placed next to each other.
  • Random Texture or Faux: This paper has no printed design pattern that repeats or is required to match. Often this pattern will include instructions to reverse every other strip to enhance the 'randomness' of the over all effect.
  • Straight Match: This pattern or design will match up in a straight-across, horizontal layout. Every strip of wallpaper will start with the same design position.
  • Drop Match: Or more correctly a 'half drop match'. This pattern or design will match up in a diagonal pattern verses the horizontal pattern of a straight match. All even number strips will be exactly the same, and all odd number strips will be exactly the same creating the alternating - diagonal pattern.
  • Working with Corners:

  • Inside corners require a new plumb line to be drawn on the adjacent wall to ensure that the pattern will continue straight. Hang the first corner strip and allow it to overlap onto the new wall. Install the adjacent strip matching the pattern in the corner then cut through both strips at the corner, removing the underlying pieces.
  • Ouside corners require the paper to be wrapped around the corner and not cut. The only time you would cut an outside corner is if the corner is so out of plumb that the pattern would be far out of square. If the corner is significantly out of plumb, use a wrap and overlap method to correct (similar to handling a inside corner where the corner is wrapped, but the adjacent wall is overlapped with the new strip and cut through both.
  • Before you start
  • Check all your wallpaper products to ensure they are the same pattern and are in the same dye lot (look on the label for lot #s, run #s, batch #s).
  • Check the wallpaper for defects. Look for clarity of design, partial pattern prints, flaking, blotched, or smeared inks. If you see any defects, do not hang the wallpaper. Call us for replacement (see our Ordering & Privacy page for handling defective products).
  • Make sure you have a clean table to lay your wallpaper on for measuring and cutting
  • Determine the seam placement for your first strip. If you are right handed, it's easier to work counterclockwise. Choose the most inconspicuous place for your first strip as it is likely that the matching finishing stripe will not match the pattern. You can also choose to start in the middle of the room and work both sides outwards so you end at the area that is most inconspiculous.
  • Create a vertical plumb line for your first strip. Corners, doors, etc, are generally not truly straight. Always start with a true straight line.
  • Select the dominant pattern of the paper and position where you consider it most desireable. This will determine pattern placement for the rest of the room
  • Measure your first strip and cut allowing a few extra inches for trimming at the top and bottom. Never cut the strip to the exact length of the wall (wall lenghts will vary, and are rarely ever true)
  • Installing Borders Remember if installing a border over wallpaper you will need to use a vinyl over vinyl paste and not the paste that is on the border (you will not wet the border but will brush or roll this special paste on your border). When matching borders to continue, use the overlap method and cut through both sections to ensure a perfect match (see overlapping instructions in the Inside Corners narrative).

    Hanging your wallpaper strip
  • For prepasted papers, submerge your wallpaper strip completely in water. A wallpaper water tray is made to handle this best. Do not leave the paper in the water tray too long or it will wash away the paste. Remove your strip from the tray and place face down (pattern side down) on your clean working table. Take the ends of the strip, fold toward each other (paste side to paste side) and let the paper relax (called 'booking') generally for 5 minutes or as long as the manufacturer recommends. This allows the paper to expand before placing on the wall. After 5 minutes unfold the paper and be sure that there are no dry areas on the pasted side, especially on the seams. You can brush paste to these areas if noticed. Now you can hang your strip.
  • For unpasted papers, lay your wallpaper strip face down on your clean table. Apply a paste product (as recommended for the type of paper you have purchased) using a paste brush or roller. Apply evenly using a figure 8 motion paying special attention to the edges. After the paper is pasted, bring the outside edges together (paste side to paste side) to book or allow the paper to relax and the paste to activate. Booking time will depend on the manufacturer's instructions but is generally at least 5 minutes.
  • Hang your strip on the wall maintaing your verticle straight line. Use a wallpaper smoothing brush to smooth out the paper and work out bubbles. A fan shape motion works best for smoothing out the paper strip. Use a seam roller to firm your seams. Note that seam rollers must be used carefully on textured or thick papers so that they do not depress the paper thickness.
